Services

Editing Services:

Developmental, Substantive or Content Editing: help authors and writers dive into the big picture of their work and ensure cohesiveness/fluidity. Help with rewrites and building the best written work possible. Most of this service will stem from heavy copy editing, which is elaborated on below.

Copy Editing/Line Editing (tiers 1-3): The following information is based off of Amy Einsohn’s The Copyeditor’s Handbook:

  • Light, medium and heavy copy and line editing: each includes ensuring consistency in all mechanical matters (spelling, capitalization, punctuation, etc.); correlating parts (formatting).
  • Tier 1/Light Copy Editing: language editing such as grammar, syntax and usage, but doesn’t include any locution that is not an outright error; point out revisions, but will not rewrite; ask for clarification but will not rewrite.
  • Tier 2/Medium Copy Editing: language editing such as correcting all errors in grammar and usage; pointing out and revising infelicities; pointing out any patches that seem wordy or convoluted and will suggest revisions; querying facts that seem incorrect and faulty organization or gaps in logic.
  • Tier 3/Heavy Copy Editing: language editing such as correcting all errors and infelicities in grammar, usage, etc.; rewriting any wordy or convoluted patches; asking for clarifications and suggesting revisions; verifying and revising facts that are incorrect; querying and fixing organization and gaps in logic.

Proofreading: includes looking over a writer’s work at any stage of their choosing (the beginning, middle or final), but will mainly focus on grammar and formatting; ensuring the writer is using punctuation, capitalization, syntax, word usage, etc. correctly. Anything after this would fall into another tier of editing.
